Stones, Vinegar & Second Opinions

I saw my doctor yesterday about my kidney stone(s). Actually, the appointment was with Dr. Smith’s P.A., Maria. She basically felt like seeing a urologist would not be much help unless I had a blockage. As for analyzing the stone and adjusting my diet, she said that with elimination diets you oftentimes create new problems due to cravings, nutrition imbalances, and so forth. She also added that stone formation is usually hereditary when there are no other signs of health problems.

“You don’t have an ounce to lose, you’re active, and you take care of yourself better than ninety percent of the people I talk to each day. You know what to do if this happens again. Until then just keep doing what you’re doing and keep up your hydration.”

As we walked out the door she told me what their nurse, who had passed fourteen kidney stones, uses as a homeopathic remedy. She drinks a shot of vinegar every day. Maria admitted that it was disgusting, but that the nurse who swears by it had not had any stones since then. Hmm…I wonder if I could find a nice tasting balsamic vinegar?

My father-in-law (a physician) thinks that I should go see a urologist. Pam spoke to him and relayed to me that fifty percent of the time they can determine if something dietary is causing the stones to form. I am not in an HMO plan, so it would be easy for me to make a specialist appointment. I am still trying to decide how much of a preventitive course of action to take.

Grandpa Buenz had quite a few stones in his day. He attributed it to drinking tea in Turkey, where believe it or not, they drink more tea than coffee. Dave recommends calcium. What’s the status on the 2 other stones? Hopefully they will find a way out.

Interesting suggestion on the calcium, as the advice used to be contrary. Of course, it doesn’t seem as simple as just calcium supplements:

Damon takes the calcium because of the amount of coca-colas he drinks. The calcium (in the form of antacids)interacts with something in the cokes so that the interaction occurs in his stomach and not his kidneys. I know that isn’t much help because I can’t remember exactly what it is all about, but it is what his urologist suggested. Maybe I can get Damon to post something that makes sense.

That makes sense, because they say that carbonated beverages like soda are not good for people who form kidney stones. It’s helping him break even. :)

I talkrd to my brother, Who is a urologist, he said SEE A SPECIALIST NOW. Its easy to tell if it is something that you will have to watch all the time or possibly change diet to keep them away. GO TO A SPECIALIST.
