If people could drink gasoline, then that is how far a person could could bicycle on a gallon of gas(#). Our human engines are far more efficient than any fuel burning vehicle on the road (including scooters, motorcycles and hybrids). If only bikes could get us there just as fast and without sweating up a storm!
When I lived in St. Elmo it was actually just as efficient to ride a bicycle versus drive a car; that is, in terms of travel time. I could pedal door to door in the same amount of time it took to drive to Finlay Stadium, park my car and walk to the office building. Back then the distance was a measely four miles. I still wonder why I did not do it more often.
Now it takes me six miles just to get from my house in Georgia to the Tennessee state line. The office is another five and a half miles. Still, I have done it enough times to become convinced that it is plausible. And with little time in the evenings and weekends to ride for recreation, it would give me both gas savings and a workout at the same time.
I just need to get into the routine of readying myself for the commute. Last night I stayed up way too late prepping my bike and gear. By the time the alarm sounded this morning I had forgotten all about hitting the road early and pedaling away — leaving the car as my only option for making it to work on time.

Well, you know Joseph Moore has been riding his bike to work at Rembrandts … I believe that’s further than your office, is it not? Youngster’s making you look bad! Get that ole competitive spirit in gear to motivate you.
Well, since we’re just over two miles from the church, and Joseph lives a block down the road, then it might just be about the same … no, actually according to Mapquest my office is only 0.88 miles from Rembrandt’s. I have further to go by at least a mile.
I hear from Matt M. that he’s thinking of riding a bike to CVMS in the fall. He’s considering getting a recumbent, but I recommended that for such a short distance he get something like a mountain bike and put slicks on it. Would be nice to get some of the guys and kids out on a trail ride, too.
Imagine that! Our bodies have an efficient design!
Yeah Rob, who’d a thunk it?
