I think that whoever the first person was who came up with telling monster stories to kids, he or she must have been a parent traveling with small children. For example, you have to be very careful when staying in a motel. Monsters are attracted to certain sounds, like jumping on the bed or intense giggling. They also have a keen sense of smell, especially for bad breath (Note: The risk goes down significantly once teeth have been brushed).
