Publix Coming to Chattanooga

Publix is coming to town! In case you have not been to a Publix before, they are heads and shoulders above the local large grocery chain competition. It is too bad that the store will be all the way up in Hixson, as we live about six miles south of the state line. However, as the Chattanoogan article mentions, this is only the beginning.

I am a transplant from the Upstate of South Carolina to the Chattanooga area. Chattanooga is a wonderful town. But, the grocery stores in this area (Bi-Lo, Food Lion) are a glaring mediocrity for a town this size. I greatly miss Publix – this was grocery store NIRVANA! Bi-Lo/Food Lion watch out – your fate may be the same as Winn-Dixie!

Karen: I agree. I’ve been pleased with some of the changes that Bi-Lo has brought to the old Winn-Dixie location in St. Elmo–they do carry Stella Artois–but beating Winn Dixie is nothing compared to competing with Publix.

Mark: Downtown or close to it…maybe somewhere between the Hwy 27 and the old Bi-Lo (behind the Pizza Hut)…some place that would draw from Downtown, Tiftonia, St. Elmo, Alton Park, Lookout and Flintstone. A few years ago there was a rumor about Bi-Lo building on all the lots between around the old Hair Wonder & Beauty Supply location, but that was before the International Towing Museum & Recovery Hall of Fame moved in. I guess with that new Cessna Decosimo statue that (ugly) building is going to be around for a while. There’s something wrong about burglar bars being on the front of a museum. :|

Trey: I agree that the grocery stores in Chattanooga are kind of mediocre, which I suppose is why the niche stores like Greenlife and FreshMarket do so well. I just worry that the market for stores like Publix is niche sized. I came here from central Pennsylvania, right around the time Kroger went out of business locally. Albertson’s made a go of it and then closed all of their locations after a couple years (I think it was bankruptcy related). I sure hope Publix isn’t another flash in the pan.

The Times Free Press just reported (10/10/06) that the second Publix site would be the former Winn-Dixie on East Brainerd Road by the entrance to the Hurricane Creek Estates. Open Summer 2007!!!

Amy: Yeah, I suppose that I should admit that I go out of my way when I’m in Atlanta just to stop at Harry’s. And I know for sure that Pam will drive to Hixson and East Brainerd for Publix!

@Matt: Good news! I cannot wait to go to the new store. Any idea when we can expect a Publix on the Southside or in North Georgia?
